Councillor warns local road network is ‘disintegrating’

SHANNON’S roads are in a bad state and need urgent action.

That was the message at last week’s meeting of the town council as Councillor Patricia McCarthy put down a motion that the area engineer, “outline the remedial works planned to repair the town’s road network, which is disintegrating at various locations”.
In a written reply, senior executive engineer Eugene O’Shea stated, “The recent spell of extremely cold weather has resulted in deterioration of road surfaces throughout the Shannon electoral area.
“Improvement and remedial works proposals have been identified at a number of locations in Shannon Town. However, the extent of these works will depend on the annual roads funding allocation that has not, as yet, been announced. As soon as the funding allocation is announced, the works will be prioritised and outlined to the council as requested,” Mr O’Shea said.
Councillor McCarthy said that no time could be wasted. “The weather has not been helpful but we can’t wait much longer or it’ll be a much bigger job.”
Labour party Councillor Tony McMahon also felt it should be completed quickly. “When areas of road are in a bad condition, the longer they are left, the worse they get. It is essential it be dealt with as soon as possible.”
Councillor Gerry Flynn said Clare is being neglected in terms of funds for roadworks.
Councillor Greg Duff said that the roundabout at the rear of Inis Rí needs to get priority, while Councillor Cathy McCafferty said it is not safe for people walking or for cyclists.
