Christmas drama in Castleconnell

THESPIANS will be treading the boards in Castleconnell next week, when the newly formed theatre group make their theatrical bow with their production of John B Keane’s iconic play, Big Maggie.

This production, directed by John Geraghty, delves back to 1960s Ireland and the life of ‘Big’ Maggie Polpin, played by Norma Hussey.
The story presents Big Maggie as a woman determined to create a better life for herself and her children after the death of her philandering husband.
The play is set in Polpin’s local shop, where the drama unfolds to magnificent effect. Maggie as matriarch is a complex figure and far from the clichés of Irish women of her time, making this an iconic and entertaining production.
The witty and true-to-life dialogue, tragic-comic moments and the depth of the characters within combine magnificently to make Big Maggie one of John B Keane’s finest plays.
The supporting cast members include Seán Hartigan (Byrne), Eilíse Ryan (Katie), Nicole Murphy (Gert), David Peters (Maurice), Shane O’Brien (Mick), Dave O’Hora (Teddy Heelin), Helen Ryan (Mrs Madden), Niamh Keane (Mary Madden), TJ Murphy (Old Man) and Martha Laffan (Old Woman).
The stage manager is Kay Barry, with Nicola Meskell directing operations. Joe Barry is responsible for the props, while Rita O’Dowd will help the actors who get stuck on their lines. Patrick Meskell is in charge of lighting, while Jenny Houston will handle hair and make-up.
“We encourage all during this festive season to come along to the ACM Centre for what is sure to be a memorable and enjoyable night and to support the new Castleconnell Theatre Group,” says PRO Susanna Morata Lowth.
Big Maggie runs from Monday, December 28, to Wednesday, December 30, at the ACM Community Centre, Castleconnell at 8pm nightly.
Tickets are available from the ACM Community Centre on 061 372750 and group members.
