Massive test awaiting ladies

CLARE face Cork in The Ragg (Thurles) this Saturday evening in a much-anticipated Munster Senior Camogie final clash. The sides met at the same stage last year when Cork emerged as convincing winners. The Leesiders will again carry the favourites’ tag this weekend but Clare supporters  expect their side will be much closer when the final whistle sounds.Clare have earned some impressive results during the current season, which saw them narrowly beaten by Galway in a play-off for a place in the league’s knockout stage.At the beginning of this season a new management team headed by Kilmaley’s John Carmody was put in place. Peter Casey is the team’s head coach and the backroom team also includes Flan McInerney from Sixmilebridge and Newmarket’s Tricia O’Grady, a former player.They invited in a number of the back-to-back winning Munster minor side and these, together with the senior players, have blended well. Exciting fare in Marion Keane finals

St Senan’s National School in Kilrush hosted the Marion Keane primary schools basketball finals for the second year in a row. Both the boys and girls’ competitions were highly entertaining and produced a high standard of play.In each competition, the finalists qualified after a series of games over the previous months involving 50 schools. Kilrush has always had a strong tradition in basketball.Cree won the boys’ competition, beating Kilmurry (Sixmilebridge) in the final. Hosts St Senan’s were in third spot with Scoil Chriost Rí, Cloughleigh having to settle for fourth position. The final was a very close affair with just one point separating the teams at the end.In the girls’ competition on Tuesday of this week, Clarecastle captured the honours, beating St Senan’s in a well-contested final.  Ennistymon finished in third spot with Gaelscoil Mhichil Chiosog from Ennis in fourth spot.St Senan’s principal, Avril Bolton, congratulated everyone on very sporting matches and competitions organiser Susan Bermingham presented the trophies and …

McCormack takes victory in all-Clare national final

In a busy weekend for Clare boxing, a weekend ironically which terminates the current season, there was a significant finale to the championship aspirations of Clare’s female boxers. Kayleigh McCormack from the Kilfenora club claimed her third national title at the expense of fellow Clare lightweight, Antoinette Keane from Ennis.

Overall award for Burren

BURREN Tug of War Club were the overall winners in both the novice and the lightweights in the Munster Tug of War League.Round eight, the final round, was held on Sunday in Aghern hosted by the Harps Club.Here, the Burren shone out to take the novice section in the 640kg against Araglen by 2-0, to take the Harps Perpetual Cup.In the senior section, Burren just got piped in the semi-finals by Ballyhooly by 2-1. Considering that Burren are only a 600kg team, they did very well up against heavier and more experience teams of senior class. Glenhill went on to beat Ballyhooly in the final 2-0, to take the Harps Perpetual Cup.Overall, Burren won this senior section of the league as they had more points over the eight rounds, 33 to 26 for Glenhill. They now go forward to compete in the Munster Championships this Sunday in 630kg at the Inishannon Vintage & Steam Rally in Cork.
