Board ratifies fixtures plan

THE masters fixtures plan for 2010, as presented to Clare GAA delegates last week, was ratified at a special meeting of the board on Tuesday night.

Miltown’s Noel Walsh told the meeting that his club had concerns about a two-month gap between Round 1 and Round 2 of the football championship ands he asked if this could be changed.
“Would it not be possible to play Cusack Cup games in June and July and move the first round of the championship closer to the second round?” he asked.
Kilrush’s Colm Browne, a member of the committee which drew up the plan said that “no-one is satisfied with an eight-week gap but it wasn’t possible to have a definite date for championship in July because of inter-county fixtures”.
O’Callaghan’s Mills delegate Jackie McHugh argued that “all divisions of the football league should start together” to which Pat Fitzgerald replied that the reasoning behind having Divisions 1, 2 and 3 starting up ahead of the other divisions is that clubs involved in these divisions have players on the senior football panel.
Wolfe Tones delegate John Morris asked if some of the National League games could be played on Saturdays. It’s a long season and clubs are suffering at present.
Replying Pat Fitzgerald pointed out that inter-county fixtures were made since last October. It probably would be possible to get a league game or two on a Saturday for a specific reason.
The plan as proposed was adopted on the proposition of Tony O’Brien (Smith O’Brien’s) seconded by Vinny Hennessy (Kilmaley).
Round 1 of the Cusack Cup is set for Saturday week, February 20 with Round 2 a week later when Divisions 2 and 3 will begin. Round 1 of the Clare Champion Cup is set for the last weekend in March.
Round 1 of the senior football championship will be on June 12 and 13 with Round 2 on August 7 and 8 and Round 3 on August 21 to 22.
In hurling, Round 1 of the senior championship will be on May 8 and 9 and May 15 and 16 with Round 2 on June 12/13 and 19/20. Round 3 will take place on July 31/August 1 with Round 4 on August 14/15 and Round 5 on August 28/29.
