The event is held in different parts of Ireland and Shannon Atlantic Airventure were proud to host it this year.
Originally founded in Britain in 1963 by modellers, the IPMS branched out into an international body, including Ireland since 2007. Society members build anything from standard kits to complicated models mostly from plastic.
IPMS Ireland was officially opened in November 2008, and currently operates out of three branches – Cork, Dublin and Shannon.
For the Shannon event, models, the majority of which were air jets and planes, were on display for visitors to marvel at. The level of detail was exquisite and IPMS member and overall winner Gerry Hanlon told The Clare Champion his model of a burnt-out Sherman tank took him months of hard work and dedication to create.
“There was probably more research that went into it. It probably would have taken six months,” he said. “I got into this when I was growing up. The comics when I was growing up were all about the RAF and Spitfires. When I was 10, my cousin had a Lancaster Bomber and gave it to me as a toy.”
The second-placed IPMS UK Trophy, modelling the Best of British, went to Alan Brislane from Ardnacrusha. Third place went to Filip Servit, of Czech Republic origin and residing in County Limerick, with his model of a Bristol Fighter.
