Water flow remains constant at Parteen

The ESB has advised that the flow of water through Parteen Weir will remain at 230 cubic metres per second today (Tuesday) and there will be a review of the situation tomorrow. This level of water flow will continue to have associated flooding to land and property in the vicinity of the Shannon downstream of Parteen Weir including the areas of Springfield, Montpelier, Castleconnell, Mountshannon (Annacotty) and the University of Limerick. This may leave other areas between Parteen Weir and Limerick also vulnerable to flooding due to local issues. ESB is continuing to monitor the situation and is liaising with the relevant county councils.

Storm Imogen leaves flooding in its wake

High Tide is forecast for 5.30pm on the Clare coast and the Shannon Estuary. The Council is warning members of the public to avoid exposed coastal locations and roads affected by flooding on Monday morning. The worst affected locations on Monday afternoon are at Kilcredaun and Rinvella near Carrigaholt, Ross Bay, Marine Parade in Kilkee, White Strand (Miltown Malbay), Lahinch promenade and carpark, and at Doolin Pier carpark. The Union of Students in Ireland has launched its SHAG week campaign across the country in six different colleges today (Monday). The campaign, at NUIG, NCI, IT Carlow, GMIT, DKIT and IADT, has two key messages – to get tested and to ask for consent. This follows a survey, published last December, showed an increase of sexually transmitted inifections (STIs) in Ireland by 4% and the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre reported an increase in rapes and sexual assaults. The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre said the victims of recent rape and sexual assault went up to 303 in 2015, from 221 in 2014, but only one in 10 are reported. This figure is only for the Rotunda hospital where the sexual assault treatment unit (SATU) is located which covers the Dublin and Leinster area. There are five other units in the country – Cork, Galway, Donegal, Limerick and Mullingar. The report showing the increase in STIs in Ireland was published by …

First half costs footballers in Tipperary defeat

Tipperary 2-7 Clare 1-7 THE Clare footballers fell to their first league defeat of 2016 in what was their first away fixture of the new season. Played in exceptionally difficult conditions in Tipperary Town, Clare played very poorly in the first half, despite being backed by a forceful wind. They did up their effort levels significantly in the second half but on reflection that fact that Clare’s starting forwards kicked just a single point from play between them, underlines where one of their primary issues lies. Clare kicked 10 of their 15 wides in the first half and this profligacy helped Tipperary into a 1-4 to 0-4 half time lead. Gary Brennan put over the games first score in the opening minute but 60 seconds later, Conor Sweeney buried a Tipperary’s goal, following a Peter Acheson run and a Philip Austin shot, which hit the crossbar. Brennan and Eoin Cleary shared Clare’s four first half points between them, with the …
